Turning words into Action
Glema's Story
Glema was born in a small island located in the Philippines. She met and married someone in my community. While waiting on her visa to come to the United States to join her new family, a hurricane struck her island Christmas day making living conditions worse than before. Waiting on bureaucratical paperwork to help her begin a better life, a relative on the island convinced her to join her in Saudi Arabi to work as a housekeeper. Against sound advice, she went. Glema's passport was taken, she was locked in a room, her paperwork was taken from her, she was deprived food. I know about this because when I learned of her situation, I intervened. We took steps to locate Glema's last known whereabouts, the U.S. Embassy stepped in, she was removed from the organization which brought her to Saudi Arabia.
